In the Dark (or how to entertain five longarm quilters when the hydro goes out) from caledonia quilter

Retreat is half about socializing and half about productivity.  I was plugging away and got the braid border finished for a Round Robin.

I finished the Block of the Month for the Binbrook guild (two blocks, really).

I also finished a sample block to see if my instructions were workable, for the house block swap group:

We were enjoying ourselves in the afternoon sunshine:
When all of a sudden - POOF!  NO HYDRO!
We looked at this for a while:
Then, we decided that since my laptop was charged up I could show them my pics from Birmingham Quilt Festival.  EXCEPT ...

“The Epic of Thread: Eight Years Later” from Dueling Threads

People ask me, “How long does it take to make a quilt”? I usually respond with, it depends. This is true, and can be broken down methodically to size, number of pieces, complexity, etc. When I am making a quilt just for me, there is no deadline. The answer is simply “as long as it takes”. I wish I could use that answer at work! When I quilt for fun, I don’t rush. I don’t ever give up. I will work on it off and on as I feel like it. No deadlines. No pressure (though sometimes I ...

July's Block 2025 from Quilt Doodle Doodles

Happy July! The 4th is in a couple of days and I'm looking forward to making my usual treats using blueberries and strawberries. I love this time of year and all the fresh produce. I'm sure to be smoking something yummy, either ribs or a pork butt for shredded pork sandwiches. (Maybe both!) It’s also our 40th wedding anniversary over the 4th of July weekend. It seems crazy, forty years have just flown by! Later this month we'll be going on our annual family vacation up north to the lake. It's always so much fun ...

Licorice Allsorts from Wendy's Quilts and More

There's nothing like a quilt show deadline to make me hurry up and finish a quilt.

I've been working on this quilt since 2021, but now it's finished and it was even displayed in the Great New Zealand Quilt Show (TGNZQS) in Christchurch in May 2025.

I'm really pleased it's finished because it's a lovely little quilt.  The colours are just so soft and the black is very dramatic against the pastels.  The coloured fabrics are Quilt Quality Chambray by Tilda .

Licorice Allsorts is a Wendy Williams design and I love it.  I did ...

Threads from the Heartland: Quilted from Becca's Crazy Projects

I finally got this quilt kit quilt onto the long arm and quilted.
I went with a Baptist fan design because it seemed like it would fit the style of the prints. The design is Kristin's Easy Baptist Fan from Urban Elementz. Their library of quilting designs is great when you have an idea of what you want.
I need to find some binding and finish this one.

Kit from Joann Fabrics (ages ago) called Threads from the Heartland.

A year-long plan from Quilting and More...

I haven’t been very productive lately; I was busy getting ready for the holidays, and I’ve had trouble deciding what my next project would be. However, last fall my local quilt group decided to do a BOM, and we all downloaded the directions from A Quilting Life for their 2024 BOM. We’ll be doing it […]

Threads from the Heartland from Becca's Crazy Projects

Do you remember the Quilt Block of the Month kits that Joann Fabrics had (20 years ago)? Well, it seems I had one partially pieced hanging out in my boxes and boxes of fabrics. I decided it was more than time to get it pieced. I still have a border to add. It's nice to finish things. This one was Threads from the Heartland. I must have been unable to find all of the blocks because there are some duplicates.

Tea Party part 6 from Wendy's Quilts and More

Wow! It's been two and a half years since I worked on this quilt! But I'm going on holiday soon and I need some hand stitching to take with me.

My quilt.

The full finished quilt designed by Wendy Williams

I have 4 tea cup blocks and 4 coffee cup blocks all prepped and just waiting for me to applique the flowers on.

So this week I've been cutting circle motifs out of fabrics and appliquing them to the wool felt in the evenings. I'm just building up a collection at the moment and will decide ...

Birds! from twiddletails

It seems to be a bird-y kind of year so far. This is a total coincidence but I love them!

"Chirp!" by Sue Spargo is a project I started with two friends. We're making one block a month.

My quilt guild holds a "block lotto" every so often.  Everyone brings one or more blocks of a given design. Afterward, there is a drawing where someone wins all the blocks.  Unfortunately, I was at a retreat last time, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these cuties.

You can find the pattern over here and ...

Licorice Allsorts...again from Wendy's Quilts and More

Do you remember my Licorice Allsorts block of the month designed by Wendy Williams?

I barely remember it myself because it's been so long since I worked on it.

But last Saturday I made a quick trip to Auckland to support my mum for a few days.  As I was throwing a few things in a suitcase I suddenly remembered that she had asked for my help with some of the trickier blocks in this quilt.

When I first saw this block of the month advertised at Material Obsession in 2021 I knew that we would both enjoy making ...
